Thank you for your interest in our study! The purpose of this study is to better understand misophonia, a condition in which auditory triggers lead to strong physical and emotional responses. This study will take place at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and will involve two in-person separate visits and two remote sessions and potentially taking propranolol, a common drug used to treat high blood pressure and can be used for relieving stage fright.
During the first, you will listen to misophonia cue sounds. Next, you will take either a propranolol or a placebo tablet, which has the same appearance as the propranolol tablet but does not contain any propranolol. Neither you nor the study coordinator will choose what experimental study treatment you get. You will have an equal chance of being given each experimental treatment. You will then answer a series of survey questions and play computer games that are designed to assess aspects of your personality, behavior, and mood. We may measure your body's response through galvanic skin response (GSR). This first session should last approximately two hours.
For the second session that occurs six hours later, you will once again answer a series of survey questions and play computer games that are designed to assess aspects of your personality, behavior, and mood. Again, we may record your body's response with GSR. This second session should last approximately 30 min.
For the remote third and fourth session 1 week to 1 month later, you will repeat the same survey questions and computer games with GSR. This third and fourth session should last approximately 30 min.
Before we invite you to Mount Sinai, we need to make sure that you are eligible to participate in this study. We have listed several conditions below that would prevent you from participating. After reading through the list, if you believe you are eligible to participate, please contact us by replying to this email (Alissa.chen@mssm.edu) or by calling the phone number (631-772-9464) and we will schedule a time for your first visit. Please do not provide us with your responses to the prompts below. Upon arriving at Mount Sinai, we will ask you further questions, meeting the criteria below does not guarantee your participation in this study. There is still a chance that we will determine that you are ineligible.
